Considering Japan didn't have Christmas until a few years ago, judging by this episode alone it's not much different than Christmas in America.
Though, New Years is still a bigger event, Christmas is coming into it's own over in the east. n.n I'm sure this has a lot to do with the burst of sales in the U.S. around that time, and Japan's heavy trade over here. So it really is about the presents, you see.
